Scored book cover

Green arrows in Image shows score on book cover

Scoring (creasing) is when a board is subject to a roller or creasing method. The roller produces a fold/indentation along a line adjacent to the spine on both sides of the spine. Covers can be scored to increase book durability in particular to reduce stress on the glue bind.

Scoring is particularly important for PUR glue (rather than less strong EVA glue). Because of the strength of PUR glue, opening a PUR cover transfers all stresses to the hinge not the glue.

This process will also reduce cracking of laminated covers and also the layer of ink – fracture lines. If cracking occurs, the substrate colour will show through the cracks which can be particularly unsightly for covers printed with dark ink.
