Digital printing is a print method where an image in electronic form is transferred directly to the paper. This contrasts with offset printing where the image is first is transferred to a metallic plate, then to a rubber roller and then to the media (paper). Because digital printing doesn’t need the intermediary platemaking (and machine setup), it has very cost effective setup and a quick turnaround. This means that digital printing is used for low print runs – the setup costs are minimal making low print runs cost effective.
There are two major forms of digital printing:
- Laser
- Inkjet
Laser printing works on the principle of electro-static charged powder that is fused onto the paper (which has also been charged).
Inkjet printing uses liquid that is sprayed onto the paper in exactly the right position.
These technologies are both CMYK-based. Dry toner for laser printing is transferred from 4 powder cartridges Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y) and Black (K). Inject uses 4 cartridges as well.
