Paperback book cover with flaps of about four fifths cover size
Book cover flaps are the panels folded beyond the cover of a paperback or softcover book to the interior of the cover. They are often called French flaps or gatefolds.
Flaps can be full flaps – about the same dimension of the cover, 1/4, 1/2 or 2/3 flaps.
Flaps are a great vehicle for information and promotional material about the author, the book and the publishing company. They can contain author biography, endorsements or a summary of the book contents.
Functionally they can act as a bookmark and are seen as similar to a dust jacket giving the book a more premium feel..
