The space at the leading edge of a sheet of paper (usually three-eighths to one-half inch wide) used when printing with a sheetfed press. This margin cannot be printed within, and is reserved for use by the grippers or the mechanisms that carry the sheet through the press.
The edge of the sheet containing the gripper margin is known as the gripper edge.
During the layout phase of prepress, allowance must be made for the gripper in the design of any page. This is the edge of the sheet that will be secured by the grippers during the printing process.
