A book bound with the half-bound or three-piece style, utilises one material or colour on the spine and corners to fortify its weaknesses. The remaining panels are usually covered in a different, and sometimes cheaper, material.
A combination of materials cloths and papers may be used. Half binding uses different materials for the spine and the corners of the book as opposed to the material used for the front and back covers.
The process is designed to enhance the durability of the book by fortifying the parts that are most vulnerable to wear and tear.
Leather is commonly used in half-binding processes, due to its strength.
