A monotype is a type of printmaking where the artist creates a single, unique image, rather than an edition of multiple  identical prints. Each print is different – sometimes slightly different – and that is why it is called ‘unique state”.

With a monotype an image is created on a smooth surface either metal or glass or sometimes acrylic. Ink is applied as artwork direct to the surface which is then transferred to the print medium e.g. paper. This gives the print a ‘painterly’ quality. The print looks like its been painted onto the medium.
