Paper passed through a stack of steel rollers to improve smoothness and print clarity. Calendered paper has a range of paper smoothness from a less smooth Antique to Smooth, depending on the number of rollers the paper passes through. This process happens right at the end of the paper making process when the paper is dry or almost finished. In supercalendaring a steel roller and a cotton roller brush the paper coating so a glossy finish is produced (by the action of the cotton roller).
